For learning in the elementary school years,  there is extensive phonic capability .  Phonic objects can be included in reading lessons.  These objects visually pull apart into their phonic letter groups, the sounds of each phonic group is sounded, highlighted and the word is squeezed back together and sounded as a word.   Sight reading practice is available for any word which was clicked by the student in a reading exercise.  These clicked words are placed into a list which can be viewed by the student and practiced.

The Spelling module allows the parent to create spelling lists for the student to study using the computer.  During spelling practice, the spelling words are also shown in it’s phonic components to help the student learn the spelling.  Spelling tests can be taken on the computer and the score automatically calculated.  The incorrect words can be automatically returned to the student for further study.

The math tables are also included with a similar cycle of learn, test, score and learn the missed sums.  Records of tests are automatically kept so that a parent can determine the student’s progress at any time.

Should home schooling parents wish to include the teaching of another language,  the Teaching-Engine provides an excellent means for this job.  Text in two languages can be included in a lesson which are direct translations.(School version only)  The sounds for all the words in both languages can be provided and a linking of the directly translated words or idioms can be set up.  When the student is studying the lesson, he can click any word, it will be sounded and highlighted in the correct language, and the equivalent word or idiom in the other language will be highlighted and sounded.  The student can practice pronunciation of a second language word by speaking it into the computer microphone, and then listening to his pronunciation directly followed by the computer sound of the word.  The student can hear the difference in pronunciations and the try recording his pronunciation again until it matches the example.  Because the computer pronunciation is created by the parent or tutor, the student will strive to match that pronunciation.

Lessons created by the home schooling parents can be copied, attached to an e-mail, uploaded to a website or burned on to a CD.  Thus it is easy to share or even sell these lessons to parents of a similar interest.

The home version of the Teaching-Engine includes record keeping for five students and lessons associated with one Tutor.   The school version has no practical limit to the number of Tutors and Students.

Parents who choose to educate their children at home may do so for a variety of reasons.  Probably, the core reason is to assure that the children receive the quality of education that the parents demand, and in many cases to include a certain cultural or family influences.  Educating at home involves taking on a substantial challenge.  To attend to normal home responsibilities and to provide effective schooling to one or more children is not a small task.  Much of the early years of education involve learning many sound and symbol associations such as phonics, words, phrases and math combinations which are usually accomplished through repetition.   Computers using effective software can very substantially assist with the direct teaching and practicing of  the early curriculum.  Kids like computers, and in many instances, will be much happier learning these basics by operating a computer having interactive lessons. 

The Teaching-Engine program is especially suitable for the home teaching environment, because new computer lessons on any subject in any language can be created .  Thus home schooling parents can completely control the content of the computer lessons.  These lessons can be shared or exchanged with other parents wishing to use the same curriculum

Sounds can be made available for every word, so for instance, with a reading lesson, if the student sees a word he doesn’t know, he can click that word and hear the sound.  This allows the student to work completely independently and a parent wouldn’t have to sit with the student when he practices reading.  This considerably lightens the teaching load for the home schooling parents while keeping the students busy with constructive learning.   Because the program has extensive automatic record keeping, the parent can closely monitor the student’s progress without having to be directly involved with every lesson.

Exercises designed to improve reading comprehension can be created as well as reading comprehension tests.  These can be associated with a separate reading exercise and spelling.
